Tuning the Series Circuit

AC: reactance, phasors, LCR, resonance

In a Year 13 practical, a student connects a 120 Ω120\ \Omega resistor, a 0.250 H0.250\ \text{H} inductor (of negligible resistance) and a 4.70 μF4.70\ \mu\text{F} capacitor in series with a signal generator that supplies 24.0 V24.0\ \text{V} rms. The frequency is initially 50.0 Hz50.0\ \text{Hz}.

(a)

explain2 marks
Calculate the inductive reactance, the capacitive reactance and the impedance of the circuit at 50.0 Hz50.0\ \text{Hz}. Explain, with reference to the phase relationships of the p.d.s across the three components, why the impedance is not simply R+XL+XCR + X_L + X_C.

(b)

calculate2 marks
Calculate the rms current and the phase angle between the current and the supply voltage, stating whether the current leads or lags. Describe the phasor diagram.

(c)

show that2 marks
Show that the current is a maximum at the resonant frequency f0=12πLCf_0 = \dfrac{1}{2\pi\sqrt{LC}}, and calculate f0f_0 and the maximum rms current.

(d)

sketch2 marks
Sketch a graph of the rms current (vertical axis) against frequency from 00 to about 400 Hz400\ \text{Hz}. Label the peak value and its frequency, the current at 50.0 Hz50.0\ \text{Hz}, and the behaviour as f→0f \to 0 and at high frequency. Explain the shape, including why the curve is not symmetrical about f0f_0, and state how the phase angle changes along the curve.
