The Runaway Cable Drum

Rotational dynamics

A contractor on a Ngauranga Gorge road project lets a full cable drum roll down a straight grass slope inclined at θ=12.0∘\theta = 12.0^\circ to the horizontal. The drum is modelled as a uniform solid cylinder of mass MM and radius RR, with rotational inertia I=12MR2I = \tfrac{1}{2}MR^2 about its axis. It is released from rest and rolls without slipping. The static friction force between the drum and the grass can have any magnitude up to a maximum of μsN\mu_s N, where NN is the normal force and μs\mu_s is the coefficient of static friction. Air resistance and rolling resistance are negligible. The diagram shows the drum at its release point and its position after rolling 15.0 m15.0\ \text{m} down the slope.
A wedge-shaped grass slope rising to the left at angle θ = 12.0° to the horizontal. A solid cable drum of mass M and radius R sits near the top, labelled 'released from rest', with a curved arrow showing it rotates clockwise as it rolls down to the right. A dashed outline shows the drum further down the slope, and a dimension line parallel to the slope marks the distance between the two positions as 15.0 m.
Data: g = 9.81 m s⁻²

(a)

show that2 marks
By considering the forces acting on the drum and the torque about its centre, show that the acceleration of the drum down the slope is a=23gsin⁡θa = \tfrac{2}{3}g\sin\theta.

(b)

calculate2 marks
Calculate the minimum coefficient of static friction between the drum and the grass needed for the drum to roll without slipping. Explain, by considering how the friction force required and the normal force each change with θ\theta, why the drum is more likely to slip on a steeper slope, and why the minimum coefficient does not depend on MM or RR.

(c)

calculate2 marks
Calculate the speed of the drum after it has rolled 15.0 m15.0\ \text{m} along the slope from rest.

(d)

explain2 marks
The same day an empty drum of identical mass MM and radius RR (modelled as a thin hoop, I=MR2I = MR^2) is released alongside the full drum. Explain which drum reaches the bottom first, and explain why the mass MM and radius RR of the drums do not affect your answer.
