From propene to an ester

Reaction scheme: addition, substitution, elimination, oxidation, esterification

Propene, CHX2=CHCHX3\ce{CH2=CHCH3}, reacts with HBr to give two products: **A** (major) and **B** (minor). **A** is converted into the alcohol **C**, and **B** into the alcohol **D**. **C** is oxidised by acidified dichromate to **E**. **D** is oxidised under reflux to the acid **F**. **C** and **F** react to form the ester **G**.
Facts you may need
  • Markovnikov's rule
  • KOH(aq) vs KOH(alc)
  • oxidation of primary vs secondary alcohols
  • ester formation

(a)

Give condensed structural formulae and names for **A** and **B**, and explain which is major.

(b)

Give the reagent and conditions to convert **A** into **C**. Name the type of reaction. Identify the different product formed if **A** is heated with KOH in ethanol instead.

(c)

Identify **E** and **F**. Describe the observation when **C** reacts with acidified dichromate, and explain why **E** cannot be oxidised further but **D** can be oxidised to **F**.

(d)

Write an equation for the formation of **G** from **C** and **F**, give the conditions, and name **G**.
