Elena had spent her childhood inside maps. Her father, a cartographer of the old school, believed that geography was destiny, and he traced their family's history across continents as though it were a single river finding its way to the sea. In his study, which smelled of vellum and lamp oil, he kept three globes. The smallest was an antique, its pigments faded to the colours of bruised peaches; the medium was modern, gleaming with the confident certainties of postwar atlases; the largest was hand-painted, made by her grandfather, and showed countries that had since dissolved like sugar in tea. Elena would spin them and ask which was true. 'All of them,' her father always said. 'And none.' He taught her that maps were not pictures but arguments. Every projection was a kind of lie, distorting some part of the world to tell the truth about another. Mercator flattered the powerful nations of the north; Peters returned dignity to the equatorial south; Goode interrupted the oceans to keep the continents honest. To choose a map, he said, was to choose a politics. When Elena was sixteen, her father died, and his maps were sold to settle the debts he had carefully concealed from her. She kept only the hand-painted globe, which the buyer rejected as too inaccurate. For a long while she thought this had been a kindness; later she understood it had been a verdict. Now, at forty, Elena worked for a satellite company that updated digital atlases hour by hour. The earth on her screens was perfectly faithful, brutally so, and there were days when she missed the lying. She would tilt the old globe in her apartment and let the dust catch the light through the dissolved countries, and feel, in a way she could never quite explain, that her father had been right after all.
